Musical Hike: Viola with High Altitude @ TBA, Boulder, CO
Sep 29 @ 9:00 am – 12:00 pm

The Boulder Phil and the City of Boulder Open Space & Mountain Parks (OSMP) have created an ongoing collaboration to connect community members with the natural world through music. This partnership includes guided musical hikes designed to complement specific works to be performed by the Boulder Phil. The hikes are free and open to the public.

Join Matt Diekman, violist from the Boulder Phil, for an easy hike along one of Boulder’s spectacular trails. Matt will guide the conversation through Western music’s connection with the natural world, and specifically to how stringed instruments are constructed and the mechanics of how they work (very much related to natural materials and awareness of the environment). We will listen to Matt play his viola in one of OSMP’s naturally-formed stone amphitheaters! The location will be provided with reservations. details

Reservations open Sept. 1. Please reserve spaces here:

Mars and Life in the Universe @ Fiske Planetarium
Oct 9 @ 7:30 pm

Inspired by Holst’s The Planets and other works on the upcoming Boulder Phil October “Infinite Space” concerts, Dr. David Brain from LASP and the CU Department of Astrophysical and Planetary Sciences joins Michael Butterman at Fiske Planetarium for a special interdisciplinary event!

Mars Attacks. John Carter. Total Recall. War of the Worlds. Mars has long held a special place in popular culture as a possible place for alien life. We now know that life like that depicted in these stories doesn’t exist on Mars – but Mars is nevertheless highly relevant to our search for life and our place in the Universe. We will use the world-class Fiske Planetarium to view Mars in the night sky, fly to Mars and view spacecraft data, and gain a sense of where other habitable planets in our galaxy might be located.  Throughout the program, we’ll also hear music inspired in various ways by “Infinite Space” and humankind’s ongoing quest to understand the universe we call home.
