Overview
A concert full of emotion, legacy, and homecoming begins with Jennifer Higdon’s blue cathedral—an ethereal, shimmering meditation on grief and transcendence. Written in memory of her brother, this piece has become one of the most frequently performed works by any living American composer. Higdon’s music is both deeply personal and universally resonant, inviting listeners into a space of reflection and quiet awe. As one of the most successful female composers of our time, her voice is a vital part of the modern classical landscape.
Robert Schumann’s Cello Concerto follows—a Romantic-era gem known for its introspective beauty and conversational interplay between soloist and orchestra. Unlike the bravado of some concertos, Schumann’s is intimate and lyrical, unfolding like a heartfelt letter rather than a public statement.
Boulder Philharmonic is thrilled to welcome Colorado native Rainer Eudeikis, principal cellist of the San Francisco Symphony, for this special Boulder homecoming. Even more meaningful: he’ll be sharing the stage with his former teacher, Phil principal cellist Charles Lee, and his mother, Phil clarinetist Michelle Orman—a true musical family moment.
The program concludes with Franck’s Symphony in D Minor, a lush and brooding tour de force where the orchestra seems to transform into a giant cathedral of sound, echoing the grandeur and drama of an organ at full tilt. Its sweeping lines and powerful emotional arc provide a satisfying finale to a concert that spans personal memory, family roots, and the enduring force of musical expression.

Beyond the Performance

THE ARTIST |
Rainer Eudekis, cello
Cellist Rainer Eudeikis brings a warm, refined expressivity to every performance. Appointed Principal Cello of the San Francisco Symphony in 2022, he previously held the same role with both the Atlanta and Utah Symphonies. Born into a musical family, he took up the cello at age 5 and has been captivating audiences ever since. He’s known for both his commanding solo presence and rich ensemble artistry. “Music at its best is a conversation—between players, with the audience, and with the composer across time,” he shares. We’re honored to welcome Rainer to the Boulder Phil stage this season!
