Welcome to the new Phil Learning Center, a series of courses that are designed to get you closer to the music that you love, presented by Music Director Michael Butterman and guests. Geared towards adults, this program will offer insight into the world of orchestral music, providing you with listening and learning tools to appreciate music from a unique perspective.
Courses will be offered via Zoom and will be available to watch on-demand on Vimeo for registered participants for 2 weeks after the streaming date. Each course consists of 2-3 sessions.

Location, Location, Location: March 1, 3 & 6 at 5:30 PM MT
This course explores the role of several cities – Venice, London, Paris and Vienna – in the development of musical style and practice. (3 sessions)
Elgar’s Enigma: April 12 & 14 at 5:30 PM MT
An examination/analysis of the famed Enigma Variations along with some educated guesses as to the answer to his riddle. (2 sessions)
Shakespeare and Music: May 3, 5 & 8 at 5:30 PM MT
This course explores the influence of Shakespeare’s plays on composers in the 19th and 20th centuries, and an exploration of the role that music played during performances of Shakespeare’s plays during his lifetime. The guest speaker is Professor Ross Duffin of Case Western Reserve University, a world-renowned Shakespeare expert. (3 sessions)
