Overview

Our 66th season begins with a nod to the past and eyes on the future. Marking the 110th anniversary of his birth, the Boulder Phil pays tribute to Benjamin Britten—a central figure of 20th-century, British music—with Arvo Pärt’s moving homage to the composer and Britten’s own explorative exhibition of orchestral timbre in his Variations on a Theme by Henry Purcell. Internationally renowned pianist Anne-Marie McDermott makes her Boulder Phil debut with Beethoven’s Piano Concerto No. 4, bringing her quintessential sensitivity and profound elegance to this mature Beethovenian work. We close our opening night, by showcasing the orchestra’s dynamic prowess and bravura in Paul Hindemith’s Symphonic Metamorphosis, which reimagines Weber’s largely obscure themes into a jazzy, symphonic spectacular you won’t want to miss.

Beyond the Performance

Anne-Marie McDermott on what shaped her career

“There’s not one path for any young person with their career. I think what shaped my career so much, especially at the beginning, was that I was willing to walk through any door that opened. I always like to recommend to young people to be open, because something may come your way.” – Anne-Marie McDermott

Leonard Bernstein shares about Hindemith

Paul Hindemith was a true master in the great German tradition, a master of melody, of harmony and counterpoint and rhythm and form and orchestration and everything that has to do with music, and he wrote beautiful music. He was a worthy successor to the long line of great German composers that included Bach, Beethoven, Brahms, and Wagner; and in the minds of many people he was the last of that traditional line.” – Leonard Bernstein,  Young People’s Concert
