This special evening features Kellan Toohey, Boulder Phil principal clarinet, alongside CU piano faculty Suyeon Kim in a program of clarinet and piano classics.

KELLAN TOOHEY, Principal Clarinet

Kellan Toohey is a versatile musician whose career spans solo performances, chamber music, teaching, and orchestral playing. A Boulder native, he holds a BM and DMA from the University of Colorado and recently joined the Boulder Philharmonic as principal clarinetist for the 2024-25 season.
He also serves as principal clarinetist for the Boulder Chamber Orchestra, Fort Collins Symphony, and Cheyenne Symphony, and is a member of the Colorado Ballet Orchestra. Kellan has performed internationally, recorded Scenes from Home featuring Colorado composers, and frequently collaborates with other Front Range ensembles.
A passionate advocate for accessible music, he co-founded Melodic Light, a Boulder County concert series offering free classical chamber music to underserved communities. Kellan’s awards include top honors in several prestigious competitions, and he made his Carnegie Hall debut in 2016. Beyond music, he enjoys composing, hiking, and spending time outdoors.

SUYEON KIM, Piano

Korean pianist Suyeon Kim is an Associate Teaching Professor in collaborative piano at the University of Colorado Boulder, having joined the faculty in 2013. She earned a BM in piano performance and an MM in collaborative piano in South Korea, an additional MM in piano accompanying and chamber music from the Eastman School of Music and a DMA in collaborative piano from the University of Texas at Austin, studying with Kihoon Yang, Jean Barr and Anne Epperson. Additionally, Kim has participated as a fellow at the Music Academy of the West, studying with Jonathan Feldman. She has performed for a wide variety of master clinicians including Gil Shaham, Glenn Dicterow, Steven Doane, Emmanuel Pahud, Jeanne Baxtresser and Warren Jones, among many others.
Kim has served as a collaborative pianist for prestigious events like the MTNA competitions, the National Trumpet Competition, and the International Clarinet Fest. She has performed at Carnegie Hall, Lincoln Center, and major venues in Seoul, and has appeared at festivals such as the National Flute Association Convention and Bassfest. Her recordings with various artists are available on Spotify and iTunes.
